Boat Capsizes, Killing Twelve Refugees From Syria The photographs of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi have taken the online world by storm, and drawn attention to the horrifying realities of the Syrian crisis. The toddler was one of twelve people who have been killed when the boat they were fleeing in capsized en route to Kos, one of Greece's islands. Amongst the others killed were Aylan’s five-year-old brother, Galip, and their mother, Rehan. The boys’ father, Abdullah, survived the accident. Details emerging about the incident have revealed that two boats departed from the Bodrum region of Akyarla. The two boats were carrying twenty-three people who were attempting to flee from the Islamic State fighters in Syria. The twelve deceased include five children and one woman. Two individuals are reported to have made their way to the shore using lifejackets while seven more people were saved in subsequent rescue operations. Two members of the group have been reported missing, but as the hours pass the likelihood of rescuing them runs low. The capsized boat was one of several dinghies that departed from Akyarlar; carrying seventeen people, the boat was loaded beyond its capacity and tipped over as a result. Several lifeless bodies were later discovered at Bodrum’s Ali Hoca Point beach. It has since come to notice that another boat carrying sixteen other people also overturned in the sea around the same time. Helicopters were sent out to save survivors. The family had previously applied for asylum and protection in Canada through relatives residing there, but the pleas fell on deaf ears. The Kurdi family belonged to the Kurdish city of Kobani in the Aleppo Governate of Syria. The area has been subjected to immense violence and bombing in the struggle between Kurdish forces and the Islamic State. The family was trying to make their way to the boys’ aunt, Teema Kurdi, in Vancouver. Ms. Kurdi works as a hairdresser and had been trying- unsuccessfully- to sponsor her family to safety. While speaking to the National Post after news of the tragedy broke, Ms. Kurdi revealed that her sister-in-law called her to inform her. “I was trying to sponsor them, and I have my friends and my neighbours who helped me with the bank deposits, but we couldn’t get them out, and that is why they went in the boat,” shared Ms. Kurdi, who moved to Canada over twenty years ago. Her claims of trying to help her... More
